SAMBO Federation
Also known as American Amateur SAMBO Federation (AASF) is a non-profit organization committed to fostering the healthy development of children and at-risk youth through the disciplined practice of SAMBO, a dynamic martial art and sport. By guiding participants on a journey of physical mastery, mental resilience, and personal growth, the organization aims to instill confidence, self-esteem, and a strong sense of purpose. Through structured training and mentorship, young athletes learn the value of dedication, respect, and perseverance - foundational skills that extend beyond the mat and into all aspects of life.
Our Federation is built on the dedication of clubs, coaches, volunteers, and supporters. Together with world-class athletes, we uphold and advance SAMBO by promoting it nationally and teaching its values and techniques to students of all ages, ensuring its continued growth for future generations.
History of Sambo in the United States
Sambo began gaining recognition in the United States during the late 1960s and 1970s as American wrestlers, judoka, and martial artists became interested in the Soviet Union’s highly effective grappling system. Early exposure came through international competitions, cultural exchanges, and demonstrations that introduced American athletes to Sambo’s dynamic throwing and submission techniques.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the sport slowly expanded across the country as coaches and athletes began forming clubs, organizing seminars, and participating in international tournaments. American competitors started appearing in world championships, helping establish the United States as an emerging presence in the global Sambo community.
Today, Sambo continues to grow across the United States through the efforts of dedicated athletes, coaches, and organizations such as the All-American Sambo Federation. With increasing participation in national and international competitions, the sport is building a strong foundation while introducing a new generation of athletes to one of the world’s most dynamic combat sports.
